One of my favorite lines from Marsha Linehan’s book, Building a Life Worth Living:
“Do not believe that she who seeks to comfort you lives untroubled among the simple and quiet words that sometimes do you good. Her life has much difficulty and sadness…Were it otherwise, she would never have been able to find those words.”
Some of the crisis counselors and friends who have helped me most personally struggled with mental illness. I remember being slightly surprised when the crisis counselor said, “this website helped me a lot.” It seemed like the people who had the wisest, most helpful things to say were extremely familiar with the indescribable emotional pain I feel.
In that sense, sometimes I tell myself that my suffering right now is a gift. It can help me find the words to comfort friends who are struggling.
